It's told by a daughter (21) and a mother (44), about the mother's past, the daughter's childhood, etc. I got the idea from the book I'm reading, The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan. But the story is set in Brazil and America, not China and America, so there's big cultural differences there.
