I'm quite scared by something I just read.

You see, for my AP Psych homework, we have to read Social Intelligence, by Daniel Goleman. It's a pretty good read, besides dragging on at points. It basically talks about the neuroscience in human relationships and interactions.

Well, one of the sections was about technology's effect on human relationships.
It is really scary. I have never been so scared by something from a book!
Goleman makes these points (basically):

1) Technology is slowly disintegrating the world from being a massive community of friendships, love, and communication into one of complete interpersonal isolation.

2) Technological items (computers, phones, etc.) are taking the place of friends and family.

3) Technology makes us objectify the people around us. When we listen to our ipods and such, we see people around us as mere things. He talked about an experiment where people listening to their ipods failed to even merely wave hello to others, while those not listening to ipods stopped to have actual conversations.

4) Even though we think we are having conversations with others when we I.M., text, or facebook with people, we are really in isolation. There is no enrichment from actual interaction, and no emotional satisfaction.

These points are things everyone already knows, really. But he made me realize the truth in them. As I said, it is really scary.

Now, let me go on facebook chat!
Haha, kidding.
