in the style of;

I've decided to create a weekly segment titled "In The Style Of", where I'm going to get a character, situation, or person, etc. and come up with an outfit, hairstyle, and makeup palette to go along with it. Fun, hm?

Fashion blog It Looks Good To Me does something similar with "Room + Outfit" and "Object + Outfit" where she creates matching rooms and outfits or matching objects and outfits. She recently did an outfit to match a cupcake; tres mignon!

So today, we're looking at Marie Antoinette, the 18th-century French queen who is infamously remembered for her expensive taste, luxe clothing and style, skyscraper hairdos, and of course, "Let them eat cake".

Outfit

Embroidered lace top, $22.90, forever 21.com; Floral pleat skirt, $16.90, forever21.com; Oaks pumps in Geo Natural, $69.00, ninewest.com

Accessories

Large scale floral tights in First Blush, $14, urbanoutfitters.com; Pearl & Bow Tie Headband, $3.99, charlotterusse.com

Hairstyle
If you want to go all out, you can attempt to reproduce the Marie Antoinette updo. But if I were wearing this outfit, I'd go for a more understated updo, like this one worn by Natalie Portman at the 2009 Academy Awards.

1. Tease the front and top of your hair for volume, then hairspray.
2. Sweep back the remaining portions of your hair (back and lower sides), twist, and secure into a loose but define bun at the back of your head. As you are doing this, make sure the top and front get swept back along with the rest of your hair, so that they become a sort of "bump" in the front, as in the picture.
3. Edit the 'do as you like it; experiment by taking some pieces out to form a wispy/messy look, or you could create a braid interweaved into the updo.
4. Hairspray, and voila! C'est magnifique!

Makeup

Bold eyes - Amp up the mascara and eyeliner, use black for both. Do not be afraid to go crazy. You could even try fake lashes, if you have experience using them.
Nude skin - Cover up with foundation, then dust over your whole face with an iridescent powder, such as MAC Iridescent Powder in Silver Dusk, to give your skin a polished look.
Red stained lips - Apply a berry-red lipstick, then blot with a tissue to make the look more subtle.

And that, mes amis, is the end of my first In The Style Of segment. I hope you enjoyed it. Try the "look" out! If you do, give me some feedback. If you don't, feedback is still loved. This is all in preparation for my future career in fashion journalism, so I'd love to hear some responses! Merci!

Au revoir!
